This week is National Reconciliation Week! National Reconciliation week occurs every year from the 27th of May through to the 3rd of June. These dates represent two milestones in Australian Aboriginal history; the successful referendum of 1967 and the High Court Mabo decision.

The tradition began in 1993, when a week of prayer for reconciliation occurred from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June, and was supported by major faith communities within Australia. By 1996, National Reconciliation Week was formally launched by the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation.

Reconciliation Australia was established in 2000 as a way to continue the momentum and national leadership towards reconciliation, and assisted in the organisation of around 300,000 people walking across Sydney Harbour Bridge on National Reconciliation Week to support the cause.

What is National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a week of celebration, and an opportunity for all Australians to learn about the shared history, culture and achievements of our country, and how we can work together to achieve reconciliation in Australia.

Throughout NRW hundreds of events are held in support of the movement towards reconciliation across Australia. The week is celebrated by schools, businesses, individuals and organisations.

Reconciliation Australia states on their website:

"Reconciliation involves building positive, respectful relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the benefit of all Australians. To create positive change we need more people talking about the issues and getting involved.”
